When you’ve hung up your boots it’s time to start playing
Even though you’re greying you can still walk
and still talk a good game.
To leave would be such a shame because
the knowledge is still there and so is the skill,
you just need the will to add a new trick
and learn to kick on in a new way.
It’s a challenging game to play, you know, but I get it,
you think it’s a joke and I can hear you laugh,
“I’d look real daft if I tried it at all,”
but walking football, my friend, is not what you think,
and I say this with less wink than nod.
You used to run around, play hard and rough,
but I say it’s tough to play at a slow pace
and add grace to a game when you walk.
So when you come to this fork in life’s road
why would you rock in your chair with your feet getting bored
when goals can be scored and former glories
can get new stories added to their memory?
Tell me why it is
that you’d hang up your boots just because you can’t run.
There’s plenty more fun to be had on those feet
and new friends to meet and magic made.
Frankly, you’d be mad, because
you can’t let go when the game’s in your heart
and the yearning starts to grow and nag away as a maddening pain
until you again live the thrill of the ball.
